Oyster Box Cricket 2009

PRESS RELEASE
27th October 2008

Oyster Box Beach Cricket League to make come-back in 2009

Following the success of the Oyster Box Beach Cricket League this season it has been decided to repeat the spectacle by staging a bigger and better league in 2009. The six teams that took part this season met at the Oyster Box on Friday, to discuss the format of next year’s league and to present this year’s winners with their trophy.

Having won nine out of ten played games, Capita’s team became the season’s overall winners and were awarded a specially made Jersey Pottery plate. Standard Bank and Rathbones were runners up having won five games each. The six teams: Oyster Box CC, Bedells, Standard Bank, Capita Fiduciary Group, Rathbones and Victor Hugo, played their first game on 7th June and have played a total of 28 games since.

“We have seen some excellent cricket being played outside the Oyster Box over the last four months. The enthusiasm of the teams has been great,” says Jonathan Jones, Director of Jersey Pottery. “We have learned a lot in this inaugural season and will evolve next year’s format to make the most of the location and competitive spirits of all teams. To make it more inclusive, we are also going to be encouraging women and children to take part.”

For four months, the Oyster Box has flattened the beach area in front of the restaurant, laid a nine metre mat for the players to bowl and run on, as well as supplied the necessary equipment and branded kit.

The Oyster Box Cricket league was introduced to present a spectacle for visitors and residents alike during the summer months.

“Feedback from guests and passers-by has been excellent”, says Jonathan, “we have had plenty of people voicing interest in taking part next season, and I think the game has contributed very positively to the overall atmosphere on St Brelade’s beach this year and we look forward to bringing it back in 2009.”
